Tatemae/Honne

Tatemae/Honne is a series of 60 paintings exploring the concept of tatemae and honne. In Japan, honne are a person’s true feelings and desires (本音, hon’ne, “true sound”), and tatemae are the behavior and opinions one displays in public (建前, tatemae, “built in front”, “façade”).Each painting is 12 inches x 12 inches (30.4 cm x 30.4 cm) without frame, mixed media on canvas, 2019-2020.
